GIR CARIBBEAN

Girls I Rate is a non-profit organisation that launched in 2016, pushing for gender equality, female representation and recognition, educational workshops, creating internships, jobs and work experience opportunities, while celebrating and honouring girls and women aged 16-30 in the music and creative industries.

Founded by Grammy award-winning songwriter, Carla Marie Williams (Credits: Beyonce, SeanPaul, Britney), GIR was created to provide a platform to inspire and support the next generation of female creatives.

Between 2016–2020 Girls I Rate have worked alongside companies and organisations such as ISLAND RECORDS, PRS, PRS FOUNDATION, SPOTIFY, VEVO, MUSICIANS UNION & PPLas support being a recognised talent development partner. Hosting A&R masterclasses, Arts Academy weekenders, social events, bursary funds and most recently mentor sessions, as well as a force addressing the systemic inequality for women in music.

After 4 years of pushing in the UK, GIR is now extending its mission towards initiating cultural exchanges between black women globally, with a particular focus on black girls and women in both the UK & the Caribbean.

GIR Caribbean will initially launch in Jamaica 2021 with the intention of expanding across the Caribbean by 2022.

Our aim is to cultivate international activity & opportunities, facilitating 50:50 gender balance across the music and entertainment industry, as well as safe spaces and educational programmes for women.

With her Mother from Trewlyny and her Father from Manchester Mandeville, Carla grew up in a Jamaican household which led her to travel between the UK and Jamaica regularly. Inspired by her heritage and culture, Carla was driven to start the GIR movement and now expand to the Caribbean.

“It’s important for me to bridge the gap between the UK and Caribbean diaspora, increasing music and culture experiences and international opportunities for black women.” – Carla Marie Williams

Girls I Rate Signed the Keychange Pledge in 2021

Keychange is a global network and movement working towards a total restructuring of the music industry in reaching full gender equality, supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Our GIR 50:50 pledge clearly sets out our initial objectives and looks to garner signatures and active support from music organisations, festivals, radio stations, artists and brands globally.

With our founder Carla-Marie Williams at the forefront as an official Keychange ambassador, our GIR 50:50 pledge will also support the objectives of Keychange through our expansive groundwork, particularly across the Caribbean.

All signatures acquired byGirls I Rate & Keychange will be collated in 2024 to show tangible progress across the industry.

Girls I Rate would be honoured if you would join us by signing our pledge to become an ambassador of our movement to push women forward globally.
